Dr. Jane Goodall is the founder of Jane Goodall Institute. Her thoughts were shaped by the motivation for environmental protection and conservation.

She follows specific qualities and principles for world betterment and by her innovations has created a more peaceful world.

Environmental and Community Programs for Young People

In 1994, the Jane Goodall Institute developed a pilot project for the region around the 52 km² Gombe National Park in Tanzania located 15 km north of the city of Kigoma in western Tanzania. This was the primary rainforest of the National Park where chimpanzees and other wildlife habitats. The environment outside was threatened by deforestation for firewood and construction timber which resulted in soil erosion, as well. The consequences were the destruction of the environment and the habitat of animals, and also long-term negative effects on human life.

In 2005 TwoWings supported a program of the TwoWings award winner Jane Goodall which is named the “Lake Tanganyika Catchment Reforestation and Education Project”, abbreviated TACARE.

The successful project TACARE has expanded. It supports the inhabitants of the surrounding villages; and has created various possibilities with respect to culture, religion, and tradition to improve people’s standard of living in a sustainable way related to their environment. Today, more than 170,000 people in 25 villages are supported or trained by Jane Goodall Institute staff in Tanzania under the TACARE.

Roots & Shoots

Roots & Shoots is part of the TACARE project. It is a global initiative activity for youth, the environment, and people. Among 45 primary schools and children’s centers in 20 villages, children play an active role in developing and implementing projects for animals, the environment, and their communities.

In the Kigoma region, the Roots & Shoots activities focus specifically on animals, the environment, and the community. Projects have already included planting trees and shrubs, excursions to Gombe, promoting children’s rights, and workshops on HIV/AIDS prevention and control. Teachers in the region were also offered further training.
